Family Tree
Capture sentimental memories by showcasing photos of your loved ones with this
Family Tree Project!
Materials Used:
#841 – Tree Kit $48.00
#839 – 5 Leaf Urn $14.00
Framed Family Photos (Tip: Dollar Stores are a good source for finding miniature
inexpensive frames)
Spray Adhesive $4.00 (Quite helpful in holding down the tree branches while
stenciling. Spray adhesive works best on smooth flat surfaces.)
Paint Kit – $17.00 (54 Brown Bear, 61 Walnut, 63 Mushroom, 64 Dark Mushroom,
87 Stoneware Blue,
89 Payne’s Grey, Extender)
Directions: Use the registration “circles” to align all of the overlays.
Stencil the urn first.
#839 – 5 Leaf Urn:
Overlay 1 – Stencil with Stoneware Blue. Shade around all edges of the
upper rim piece with Paynes Grey.
Also, shade the sides of the large urn area and the lower edge of the bottom
piece. Adding Extender will
help you to achieve a more uniform look when stenciling larger areas. It also
helps you to shade more
softly. On a styrofoam plate, pour a small amount of paint and a small amount
of extender next to it.
Using your stencil brush or a sponge, dip first into the paint and then into
the extender. Blend together
and wipe off the excess on a piece of paper, using a swirling motion. When stenciling,
a very dry brush or
sponge is critical.
Overlay 2 – Stencil with Stoneware Blue. Shade the sides and lower edges
of these sections with
Paynes Grey.
Overlay 3 – Stencil with Paynes Grey.
#841 – Tree Kit:
Overlay 1 – Stencil trunk with Brown Bear. With Walnut, shade areas where
trunk sections will cross each other.
This will distinguish the 2 trunk sections from each other and give it a more
dimensional look.
Overlay 2 – Stencil the second trunk overlay with Brown Bear and Shade
with Walnut following above
directions. Do not shade areas that cross each other if they have already been
shaded. You don’t want to
have shading on both adjacent edges of areas that meet each other.
Overlay 3 – Now you are ready to stencil the third overlay. This one
is the most difficult. Use the bottom
corner registration “circles” of this third overlay to line up with the top
corner registration “circles” of the
previous two overlays. Use a lot of masking or stencil tape to hold up this
overlay. Spray adhesive is
very beneficial with holding down the branches. Carefully stencil with Brown
Bear and randomly shade
with Walnut.
Next, add the leaf sprigs wherever you wish. Use all 3 different sprigs and use them to extend the stenciled branches and fill in empty spaces. Use parts of the sprigs to fill in smaller areas. You can make this tree as sparse or as full as you wish. Use the tree picture as a guide. The branches may be done with Brown Bear, shaded with Walnut and the leaves are stenciled with Mushroom and shaded with Dark Mushroom.
Your tree is now finished and awaiting the final step of your project. To help decide where to hang your pictures, use pieces of masking tape to temporarily mark the placement of each frame. Step back to gain perspective and rearrange the tape pieces if necessary.
